Why I write...

by lezlie lowe, over 3 years ago

My work in Canada's cultural industry takes shape as creative nonfiction and journalism, but its value is in sharing stories and bolstering our understanding of our world and ourselves.

I knew I was a storyteller before I knew how important that role is in our communities and for our democracy. I wrote books as a kid and stapled them together at my mom's work. I mailed missives to friends in other cities — not letters, reports, stories, illustrations, accounts. I was carving a path, then, I didn't even understand.

As the legacy media Canadians have counted on for generations change, the shape of and support for digital content that upholds storytelling, balance, focus and, by way, democracy, must be carefully considered.
