After I finished writing my doctoral dissertation at McGill under Louis Dudek on Pound’s Cantos – it was hard work – I said to myself, ‘If that’s what it takes to write about a great poet, then what does it take to be a great poet and fabulist?’ I vowed that I would work at my craft 4 hours a day 6 days a week come what may, even if at times it meant just doing ‘babble and doodle’ (Frye’s phrase). And I have done that till my seventies – now I only do 2 hours a day 6 days a week. But hard work isn’t enough, support is also needed, and this Canada has provided through the Canada Council. For this, for myself and for everyone else, my thanks.
