Through the publication of more than 20 books, I have been telling some of the lesser known, but nonetheless dramatic and important stories from Canadian history. As a student at the University of Waterloo, I did my degree project on Simon Girty, a controversial Loyalist who fought in the Western Theatre of the American Revolutionary War. Girty was greatly and unfairly reviled in American history and lore, and became known as "The White Savage" because of his sympathy for the cause of the Native peoples. Many years after graduating from UW, I had the opportunity to write Simon Girty: Wilderness Warrior for Dundurn Press. It is the only Canadian-authored biography about a fascinating individual who, if he had been fighting on the other side, would probably be as much celebrated as Daniel Boone. The book is among my personal favourites.
